What happens when two deeply conflicted siblings with a jaded past meet in a secluded cabin? In a Forest Dark and Deep is a psychological thriller that mines the depths of sibling rivalry.  Bobby arrives with the expressed intent of helping Betty clear out her cabin.  But what unravels is a masterful expose of a relationship riddled with animosity, misgiving, guilt – and ultimately, love.  At the core of their rivalry lies a secret as dark and as impenetrable as the woods themselves. When finally unmasked, that secret will forever change their lives.

WHISTLER PRODUCTIONS BRINGS BACK  LABUTE'S IN A FOREST DARK AND DEEP TO WASHINGTON DC
May 30th and 31st

What happens when two deeply conflicted siblings with a jaded past meet in a secluded cabin?  The answer can be found in Neil LaBute’s play In a Forest, Dark and Deep, produced by Whistler Productions and opening May 30th at the Mead Theatre Lab at Flashpoint, Washington, DC.

In a Forest is a psychological thriller that mines the depths of sibling rivalry.

The two-person play marks the debut of Whistler Productions and stars Whistler Producing Artistic Director Emre Baris as Bobby and Brooke Davis as his sister Betty. Baris, trained at the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts School of Film + Television and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London UK where he performed Shakespeare's Two Noble Kinsmen in May, 2011.  Davis, appearing in her first professional production, is a graduate of the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts.

Baris was drawn to this play from the moment he learned of its London opening.  “There are secrets buried deep inside all relationships, and all families.  Even the happiest of them,” notes Baris.  “For most of our lives, we indulge ourselves in a taboo against ever revealing them.  LaBute allows the characters of Bobby and Betty no such luxury. And as his audience gets sucked deeper into their rivalry, he denies them the same privilege.  In the end, you almost wish their secret would stay hidden.”

One of LaBute’s trademarks is the intense attention he pays to language, something that also deeply impressed Baris.  Baris was classically trained by the renowned acting coach John Barton at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.  Having performed Shakespeare’s Two Noble Kinsmen in London, Baris believes that “the language of the theatre should always transcend the language of everyday life. Otherwise, you are better off simply sitting at a bar and eavesdropping.”  But he is quick to add that “the same language must capture the grit, the anguish, the agony, and the triumph of what it means to be alive.  The high art is always to make characters seem real yet better than real at the same time.”
